For April’s Member Spotlight, we are excited to learn a little bit more about Devin Stone, APR.

How long have you been a PRSA member? I’ve been a PRSA member off and on for more than a decade.

What do you value about your PRSA membership? There are so many aspects I value about PRSA. I appreciate the environment of like-minded professionals, and the ability to speak freely about the unique challenges we face along with creative solutions. I also appreciate the learning opportunities, especially as it relates to innovation and remaining fresh and relevant in the industry.

What is your current role and what does your day-to-day look like?

I serve as the Communications Director for the Tennessee Department of Human Services, where I’m fortunate to lead a talented team of communication professionals. Together, we support dedicated state employees who work every day to improve outcomes for Tennesseans. We spend a lot of time developing clear communication strategies for complex programs, creating customer‑focused materials, and keeping the public informed about our programs, services, and initiatives. No two days are the same, but every day is an opportunity to help people better understand and access the support they need.

April is APR month, which is fitting because you have your APR and you are actively helping others achieve their APR as a mentor! What made you want to obtain your APR and what advice do you give to professionals considering the accreditation process?

I’ve been in the industry since 2008 – and things were a lot different then. I’ve learned a lot on the job since then, but the APR process allowed me an opportunity to focus on the methods and mechanics of communications again. To anyone who is interested – I’d say do it! It’s a rewarding experience that will sharpen your thought process as a communicator.

Do you have a specific interest area in public relations/communications that you feel professionally passionate about?

I think it takes a specific PR skillset to work in public service, along with the heart to serve others. Merging the two can be challenging, but very rewarding.  I’m very passionate about the work I’m able to do now, in service to Tennesseans across the state, especially those who may feel their perspectives are not heard, understood, or valued. As a communicator, I know it’s my responsibility to take all perspectives and needs into consideration.

And finally, I heard you are a Lego enthusiast. What has been your favorite build to date?

I am! It’s hard to really narrow it down to one, but my very favorite build has been Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter book/movie series. It was a birthday gift to myself, and took me a couple months to complete. I loved the details and easter eggs from books and movies.
