We’re Hiring!
The Department of General Services for the State of Tennessee and the Office of the First Lady are looking for just the right person to fill the role of Director of Communications for the First Lady and join our team.
As the Director of Communications, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy for the First Lady and her Tennessee Serves initiative. You will develop speeches and remarks for the First Lady, as needed. You will manage the creation and distribution of physical and digital materials from the Office of the First Lady (OFL). You will serve as the primary point of contact for all media, as well as create content for the First Lady’s website and the Tennessee Serves website. Other responsibilities include managing social media, assisting with OFL and Executive Residence events, including the annual holiday tours, and traveling with the First Lady across the State.
When you join the Department of General Services, you will enjoy a competitive benefits package that includes flexible and hybrid remote schedules; health, dental, vision, and life insurance; tuition assistance; 401K, and retirement plans; employee discounts for personal purchases; free downtown parking; better-than-average sick and annual leave (PTO); plus, State holidays. The monthly starting salary is $5,417 (determined by experience), and has a flexible work schedule with a minimum of three days in the office.
The Director of Communications reports to the First Lady’s Chief of Staff and works at the TN Executive Residence, which is administratively attached to the Department of General Services.
Are you the person we’re looking for?
You are media savvy and a skilled communicator
You are skilled in dealing with journalists and the media. Whether it’s creating online content, writing speeches, or presenting, you’re comfortable communicating verbally or in writing. You have experience crafting an authentic voice, as you will be responsible for crafting the First Lady’s public image. Whether you’re writing, editing, or proofing, you’re a grammar guru and adept at following a brand standard.
You are politically savvy, as well as down to earth
You exhibit confidence and professional diplomacy while effectively relating to people at all levels. You understand the political environment, management priorities, and staff roles and responsibilities. You grasp external factors impacting the organization. You recognize the discretion needed while working for the First Lady and interacting with the Governor’s Office. You are also comfortable working in close quarters with a small team of people who support the First Lady, where it feels more like family than simply co-workers.
You’re self-motivated and highly organized
You think strategically, and you’re not afraid to take initiative. You think one step ahead, anticipating feedback and requests that efficiently move projects forward. You are results-driven and skilled at managing projects while adhering to timelines. You take a proactive approach to tasks or projects assigned to you. You can handle multiple projects at one time while maintaining strong attention to detail.
You’re a digital marketer at heart
In this role, you’ll manage online content using Adobe Experience Manager (experience with AEM or other content management systems is required). You’re comfortable deploying email campaigns using Mailchimp (or similar), and you have experience collecting feedback and analyzing results through Survey Monkey. You’re also skilled at using various digital platforms and channels to communicate with multiple audiences, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. In addition, you understand the value of using graphic design, photography, and videography to engage your audiences, and you can create graphics in Canva when needed.
